For a 1985 series, Warhol selected several iconic commercial advertisements, ranging from ads for fur coats to Hollywood motion pictures. Warhol had understood the importance of advertising since the 1950s and was skilled in illustrating the latest trends in women’s fashion and accessories. In this painting, Warhol recon gures the bottle of Coco Chanel’s hugely popular fragrance CHANEL N°5 in bright colors, giving this classic product a contemporary look and feel. CHANEL liked it so much that they eventually used the image to market the perfume.
